I'm trying to download an animation, but it isn't working. What should I do? [index]
Some animations in this Companion Website require the Macromedia Flash Player. To obtain the free Macromedia Flash Player, visit: http://www.macromedia.com/downloads/ and click on the appropriate link.
Why can't I open the PDF files? [index]
If you have problems opening pdf files, you may not have the required version of Acrobat Reader. To download a free version of Acrobat Reader, visit the Adobe site at: www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html
I'm a PC user and I'm having trouble downloading Microsoft Word / Microsoft Excel files. Can you help? [index]
Clicking on file links will result in different behaviours on different systems, depending on how your system is configured. Left-clicking on the links once will most likely result in the file being opened in your browser's window. If you would prefer to save any of the Word or Excel files directly to your hard drive, simply point to the link, right click on your mouse, and select 'Save Target as...'.
To open the link in a new window, simply point to the link, right click on your mouse, and select 'Open in New Window'.
If you are unable to open the files using the above techniques, please download the zipped versions. If you are unable to open the zipped versions, your computer may not have the program necessary to unzip these files. We recommend the free StuffIt Expander from Aladdin Systems. Click on this link to download StuffIt Expander: http:www.aladdinsys.com/expander/
I'm a MAC user and I'm having trouble downloading Microsoft Word / Microsoft Excel files. Can you help? [index]
Clicking on file links will result in different behaviours on different systems, depending on how your system is configured. Left-clicking on the links will most likely result in the file being downloaded to the default location on your hard drive. Find the file and open it by clicking on it. If the file has a generic icon and fails to open, you can try dragging the file to the application's icon. For example, if it is a Microsoft Word document, try dragging the file to Microsoft Word's icon. Alternatively, you could open Microsoft Word and then use the Open command and navigate to the appropriate file and open it that way.
If the above fails, please download the zipped versions. Then unzip the files using the free StuffIt Expander from Aladdin Systems or similar. Click on this link to download StuffIt Expander: http:www.aladdinsys.com/expander/
Why can't I open up the '.gsp' files that I downloaded? [index]
Some of our technology applications make use of The Geometer's Sketchpad files. If you do not have this program installed on your machine, you can order the Instructor's Evaluation version from the Keypress website: http://www.keypress.com/sketchpad/sketchdemo.html
When opening the Sketchpad files for the first time, you may need to show your computer where you have saved the program. If an 'Open With' Windows box appears with a list of programs, select 'Other' and locate the folder where you saved The Geometer's Sketchpad. Click Open. Tick the check box that reads 'Always use this program to open these files' and click OK. From now on, all files with the extension '.gsp' will attempt to be opened with The Geometer's Sketchpad.
Please note: the demo version will allow you to view and use the Sketchpad files, but not save changes or print them out. To purchase the full version, contact:

I pressed 'Reset' at the end of one of the drag and drop activities, but not all of the labels went back to the starting box. What should I do? [index]
This tends to occur if you are in the middle of dragging an item over to the answer, but your time runs out. The best thing to do is to click on the 'Refresh' or 'Reload' button that appears on your Internet browser's toolbar. Alternatively, you can press the 'Start' button in the activity itself, and manually drag and drop the label to the desired position.
I can't read the labels in the drag and drop activities, as the font is too small. Can I make it larger? [index]
The drag and drop activities are viewed best on a full screen. You need to resize the window so that it takes up the whole screen of your computer. If you are using a PC, you can use the 'maximise' button that appears in the top right corner of the window. The button features a square on it, and appears next to the 'close' button, which features an 'X'. MAC computers also have this feature but it may be located elsewhere, depending on the version of the operating system.
If you aren't sure how to find this shortcut, try resizing your window manually. Move your mouse pointer over to any edge of the window until you see the icon change to a black double-sided arrow. Now, click and hold down the left mouse button and drag the window to the edge of your screen. Repeat this for each side of the window frame until the window fills your screen.
When I go to one of the drag and drop activities, a Macromedia window pops up, asking me if I want to install and run 'Macromedia Flash Player 6'. Should I press 'Yes' or 'No'? [index]
All of our drag and drop activities require version 5 or 6 of Macromedia Flash Player to function properly. If you have an older version of the program, you will need to download the current version (6), so press 'Yes'. If you have version 5 though, you do not need the newer version to complete the activity (though you may of course choose to download it anyway). You can press the 'No' button and move on to do the activity without any problems.

I've entered the correct answer in the box, but the grading tool is marking it as incorrect. What's going on? [index]
The grading tool is programmed to accept answers in a particular format only. For example, you may have entered '$20' into the answer box, but it will actually only grade the term '20' as correct. To avoid this problem, please read the question very carefully – symbols like ° or $ may already be part of the question, so you will not need to include them in your answer. Please also read the instructions at the beginning of the pattern match exercises for each chapter – these will state things like the number of decimal places required in your answer, or whether you need to spell out or use a digit in your answer.

My question isn't here. What should I do now? [index]
Please go to the home page by clicking on the 'Home' icon in the black navigation menu on the left side of the website. Now, click on the 'Help' button that appears on the left, just above the Longman logo. Scroll down the contents menu until you find the relevant section.
Still no luck? Please click on the 'Feedback' button that appears in the black navigation menu within the website. (You cannot access this from the home page – you will need to click on 'Begin'.) Use the drop-down menu to categorise your query, and then complete the fields in the box. We will contact you as soon as possible.
